Karl Hoffstedt was a business minded man, who ordinarily kept to himself. One day, he was asked to play cards with some other men in the village. Naive, bookish Karl did not expect there to be tricks involved! Poor Karl was sneaked out of a very large sum of money. When Karl Hoffstedt, using his tinny, reedy voice refused to pay up, the brutes tied a heavy iron nail to his chest and threw him in a nearby pond.
